From 2007 – 2009 I worked on a long-term drawing project.
It was the first time I’d ever done anything like it, but the concept was simple, if a little scary: break out of a rut. Having spent most of my adult artistic life creating highly planned, carefully crafted and minutely executed pieces, I was stuck. I had been outside of art-making for a while, and I doubted my abilities and intentions. To invest the kind of time and effort I had mistakenly come to believe was necessary to create valued work seemed impossible unless I was sure of a successful outcome. Daunting, to say the least. A post on Drawn.ca about a homework assignment from an illustration program to draw 100 heads over the summer introduced me to the idea of quick drawings but in large quantities. Quick drawings to eliminate the preciousness; large quantity to up the ante.
Thus 100 Heads began.
